Wall Street Week Ahead: Jobs data, election may overshadow earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Earnings season may be only half over, but the focus on profits should subside this week as investors turn their attention to the coming election and Friday's jobs data - the last major economic indicator before the November 6 contest.

More bellwether companies are set to report results in what will be another "peak week" of the earnings season. Such a flurry of numbers normally holds Wall Street's attention, and it can lead to market swings. But volume and volatility may be slight this week, with market participants opting to remain on the sidelines ahead of the jobs data and the election.

The U.S. government's October jobs report will give a snapshot of the current labor market. It could also give a bit of a lift to President Barack Obama, should it come out better than anticipated, or help Republican candidate Mitt Romney - if it is worse than forecast.

Polls currently indicate that President Obama is a slight favorite to win on November 6, but the race will be tight. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters shows the president ahead - 47 percent to 45 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.5 percent last week, largely because of a spate of earnings disappointments. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 1.8 percent last week, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent.

What is notable, however, is that rebounds have been brief and quick to attract sellers.

Some investors cited the approaching election as a barrier to committing new capital to the market.

"Not many people have the stomach to plop down their bets when polling is so close," said Hayes Miller, the Boston-based head of asset allocation in North America at Baring Asset Management. "For the most part, investors will wait and see what happens."

Miller, who helps oversee more than $50 billion in assets, said the trend of caution would be especially pronounced in the health care <.gspa>, financial <.gspf> and energy <.gspe> sectors - three areas that may face different regulatory outlooks, depending on the election's outcome.

"These are the ones really in play," he said.

Expectations for the nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday, are by no means certain, either. Analysts expect 124,000 jobs were added in October - up 10,000 from September. However, the unemployment rate is also seen ticking higher - to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.

A payroll surprise in either direction could further cloud expectations for the election's outcome.

"A big change in payrolls could cause some uncertainty over the winner," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Alabama. "I don't expect a big surprise, but while the S&P doesn't seem especially vulnerable at these levels, I don't think it is in a hurry to go up, either."

The market will also have to contend with the weather. Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the eastern third of the United States, including the East Coast, by Monday night with torrential rains, high winds, major flooding and power outages. In New York, officials will close the city's bus and subway lines, and commuter railroads at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday. Decisions have not been made whether to close bridges and tunnels leading to Manhattan in preparation for the storm's arrival.

At the New York Stock Exchange, the plans call for business as usual. The exchange issued a statement saying it has contingency plans to have the market running, adding that it has back-up power generation facilities. The Big Board will make accommodations for critical staff and traders.

Rival marketplace NASDAQ OMX said in a statement that it plans to make sure its systems are ready. It will communicate with its members before, up to and after the storm.

EARNINGS IN PLAY, IF NOT IN FOCUS

While the market at large may be waiting on news events, individual stocks could still be volatile as earnings season grinds along. More than half of the S&P 500 components have reported results so far. This week, though, will bring reports from some marquee names such as Dow components Chevron and Pfizer , as well as S&P 500 stalwarts Visa , Ford Motor and Starbucks

This earnings season, a number of high-profile companies have missed estimates, including sour notes last week from Apple Inc , United Technologies and DuPont .

With 54 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 62.5 percent have topped earnings expectations, under the 67 percent average over the past four quarters. Just 37 percent have topped revenue forecasts, well under the 55 percent over the past four quarters.

The earnings disappointments led to some intensive selling, driving the Dow industrials down 243.36 points last Tuesday.

The S&P 500 has ended down in five of the past seven trading sessions. Those declines have pushed the benchmark S&P under its 50-day moving average of around 1,434, leading some analysts to believe it may be ready for a bounce.

"We'll use any pullback as an opportunity to buy," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. "Even though we've seen a number of companies miss expectations and be overly cautious, we're focusing on how a majority have beaten."

Cobb said he was especially looking to results this week from U.S. Steel Corp . Its stock is down almost 20 percent so far this year.

"Steel companies have been participating really poorly, and I'm anxious to see if that will continue," he said.

Exclusive: Massachusetts' regulator eyes other firms on research

BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts' top securities regulator said on Friday that his office is looking into whether top Wall Street investment banks in addition to Citigroup have leaked research in violation of state law on how to share this kind of information.

"We are looking at all of them, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan," regulator William Galvin said in a telephone interview about the probe. "It is a very active investigation," Galvin said, declining to give more information about what kind of charges may be made.

Earlier on Friday, Galvin's office said it has won a $2 million settlement with Citigroup after two of its analysts doled out information about top technology companies to a small number of journalists. Citi fired Mark Mahaney, the senior analyst in the case, and an unnamed junior analyst in the wake of the Massachusetts probe.

Galvin's office said Citi's junior analyst passed on some of the bank's confidential financial forecasts about Facebook while the senior analyst passed on confidential information about Google unit YouTube. Galvin said the Citi case was concluded first because his investigators were able to find emails to prove the information was discussed improperly.

"This is a recurring theme. The banks promise there is a firewall between research and marketing, that they will observe the quiet period, but that is clearly not the case," Galvin said.

He said he is pursuing the investigation nearly a decade after big banks reached a global settlement on research to make sure that investors are protected. "This is about not having two sets of rules one for preferred clients and one for everyone else," Galvin said.

Galvin has a reputation for acting quickly on issues where federal regulators may be slower to move in. "Mr. Galvin is very aggressive, and, in fairness, does a great job in upholding the law in Massachusetts," said Anthony Sabino, a business professor at St. John's University.

He also said there may be more to come on how the banks treated clients.

"Keep in mind this is but a preview of the ongoing shareholder litigation, regulatory investigations, and so on trying to find out what went wrong with the Facebook IPO."

Surface pre-order deliveries delayed in the UK and Canada, Microsoft offers coupon for the inconvenience

We began hearing grumblings of delayed Surface deliveries in the very early hours of this morning, and it seems it's not an unlucky few that are suffering, but an unlucky many. There were reports of delays to shipments in the UK and Canada less than a week ago, but Microsoft was quick to dismiss the claims as an error and put minds at rest. Now, it seems, the white flag has been waved and blame acknowledged. Eager to appease disgruntled customers, the company is offering a £50 or $50 Canadian coupon (depending on your accent) to spend in the Windows Store as recompense. While it provides little relief to those who had a shut-in weekend planned, at least you can trick out your new toy when it finally arrives, at Microsoft's expense. And, if you've received neither a Surface nor a coupon, we suggest you reach out for the freebie -- if your fingers aren't hitting tiles, they might as well be hitting keys instead.

Map shows path of Hurricane Sandy

(AP) ? When Hurricane Sandy becomes a hybrid weather monster some call "Frankenstorm" it will smack the East Coast harder and wider than last year's damaging Irene, forecasters said Friday.

The brunt of the weather mayhem will be concentrated where the hurricane comes ashore early Tuesday, but there will be hundreds of miles of steady, strong and damaging winds and rain for the entire Eastern region for several days, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The hurricane has killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean, and just left the Bahamas. It is expected to move north, just off the Eastern Seaboard.

As of Friday morning, federal forecasters were looking closer at the Delaware shore as the spot it will turn inland and merge with a wintry storm front. But there is a lot of room for error in the forecast and the storm could turn into shore closer to New York and New Jersey and bring the worst weather there.

Wherever Sandy comes ashore will get 10 inches of rain and extreme storm surges, Louis Uccellini, NOAA's environmental prediction director, said in a Friday news conference. Other areas not directly on Sandy's entry path will still get 4 to 8 inches of rain, maybe more, he said. Up to 2 feet of snow should fall on West Virginia, with lighter snow in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, regardless of where Sandy first hits.

A wide swath of the East, measuring several hundreds of miles, will get persistent gale-force winds in the 50 mph area, with some areas closer to storm landfall getting closer to 70 mph, said James Franklin, forecast chief for the National Hurricane Center.

"It's going to be a long-lasting event, two to three days of impact for a lot of people," Franklin said. "Wind damage, widespread power outages, heavy rainfall, inland flooding and somebody is going to get a significant surge event."

That storm surge will only be magnified by the full moon this weekend to make it a "dangerous period," Uccellini said.

Last year's Hurricane Irene was a minimal hurricane that caused widespread damage as it moved north along the coast after making landfall in North Carolina. With catastrophic inland flooding in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Vermont, federal officials say Irene caused $15.8 billion in damage.

Sandy is "looking like a very serious storm that could be historic," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground. "Mother Nature is not saying, 'Trick or treat.' It's just going to give tricks."

Government forecasters said there is a 90 percent chance ? up from 60 percent two days earlier ? that the East will get pounded.

Utilities are lining up out-of-state work crews and canceling employees' days off to deal with expected power outages. From county disaster chiefs to the federal government, emergency officials are warning the public to be prepared. And President Barack Obama was briefed aboard Air Force One.

Boat owners were yanking their vessels out of the water Friday at the Southside Marina in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., about 60 miles south of New York City.

"We're taking them out as fast as we can," said marina employee Jim Martin.

Atlantic City's casinos made contingency plans in case they have to close, as they did for three days last year when Tropical Storm Irene approached.

Eastern states that saw outages that lasted for days after last year's freak Halloween snowstorm and Hurricane Irene are already pressuring power companies to be more ready this time.

Asked if he expected utilities to be more prepared, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick responded: "They'd better be."

Jersey Central Power & Light, which was criticized for its response to Irene, notified employees to be ready for extended shifts. In Pennsylvania, PPL Corp. spokesman Michael Wood said, "We're in a much better place this year."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday said the city was striking a tone of calm preparedness.

"What we are doing is we are taking the kind of precautions you should expect us to do, and I don't think anyone should panic," Bloomberg said. The city has opened an emergency situation room and activated its coastal storm plan.

Some have compared the tempest to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but that one hit a less populated area. Nor is this one like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowfall.

"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion" this time, Masters said. "Yeah, it will be worse."

Self-Service, Social Media Power Better Customer Service for Utility ...

There?s a nightmare brewing for East Coast utility companies: FrankenStorm, a monstrous merger of hurricane and winter storm that could inflict $1 billion in damages and leave people without power for weeks. And no matter how hard and fast utility companies work to restore service after a storm or outage, it never seems to be fast enough for affected customers.

According to J.D. Power and Associates? 2012 Electric Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study, overall customer satisfaction with electric utility companies is down from last year, a 625 out of a possible score of 1000. Even worse for brand reputation, two utility companies top the list of the Top 15 Most Disliked Companies in America.

Restoring Customer Satisfaction
Customers don?t like to be kept in the dark when it comes to their utility services. Better and more proactive electronic and social media interactions are shown to up the average customer satisfaction score 89 points to 714. This includes providing outage updates and service schedules via email, mobile applications, social media and website updates.

The study finds that 82 percent of customers prefer to be proactively contacted during outages with information and updates.

?The more information electric utilities proactively provide during an outage, the higher customer satisfaction will likely be,? said Oberle. ?Customers value being kept up to date and want to resume their lives as quickly as possible. Notifying them in a proactive manner ensures that they know the latest information and are kept apprised of their unique situation.? said Chris Oberle, senior director of the energy and utility practice at J.D. Power and Associates.

Delivering Service Updates Where Customers Are
When the power goes out, many customers go to social media or reach for their smartphone to complain online, contact their utilities company about outages, see when crews will be in their area and more.

When utility companies proactively note on social media, their website or via mobile apps that they are aware of outages, are working to restore service, are working in certain communities, or will be working in certain communities, this cuts the number of phone calls and emails from customers, as well as hold times which cause frustration dramatically, allowing utility companies to better focus on the work at hand.

?Electronic communications offer many advantages to both energy utility companies and their customers,? said Oberle. ?Not only are they extremely quick and cost-efficient, but they also enable utilities to tailor messages to targeted customers. It is a win-win situation for both.?

Utility companies, as well as phone and cable companies, are smart to invest in both self-service information delivery and proactive social media communication as a way to serve and satisfy more customers when the power goes out.

How To Make The Right Health Insurance Decision | Bwpco - Brant ...

There are a lot of people who wait until it is too late to get health insurance. For many people, this happens because they tend to not think about it when they are healthy, or perhaps they do not understand it, but mainly it is because it?s just an added expense. This article has information on the matter that should keep you informed.

TIP! Before purchasing health insurance, make sure you know about everything that you will be required to pay yourself. Take into account all costs, such as your monthly premium, deductibles, co-pays and any other fees.

You need to review your health insurance policy to see if any prescriptions are covered in the policy. The list of prescriptions covered changes every year, so read it over each time you renew your policy to see what is and isn?t covered.

Credit Card

TIP! Do your research and calculate your costs if you are thinking about purchasing individual health insurance. Don?t buy a policy until you calculate the total of all of the associated expenses.

Save money by never paying your health insurance premiums with your credit card. Certain companies charge you an additional 15 percent for using a credit card. They could also add on an administration fee.

If you?re considering getting a policy with an HMO, but you like your current doctor, ask him which company he is affiliated with. You can avoid switching doctors if you choose a network your current doctor belongs to.

TIP! For those whose vision is already impaired eye care coverage is a must. Vision insurance can cover a majority of your checkup costs as well as the costs of any frames, lenses or contacts you may need.

It is often to your advantage to find a group that you can align yourself with when choosing a health policy. A group insurance should be cheaper than an individual policy. If you are working, your company is probably able to secure group rates for employees. Alternatively, various trade groups, alumni associations and other organizations may offer members group health insurance.

Many people do not have the income to pay for complete health insurance coverage. If you are one of these people, but still want some level of health insurance, obtaining a health insurance policy that protects you from catastrophic events could be an effective and affordable alternative. It?s a great addition to your portfolio too as extra coverage for extreme circumstances.

TIP! If your company offers wellness discounts, do them! Insurers commonly offer discounts on things like gym memberships, smoking cessation aids, weight-loss consultations, flu shots, and nutritional classes. Utilize these benefits as much as possible because you may be rewarded with lower insurance premiums, as well.

If you do not visit the doctor very much, you should look into starting an HSA, or Healthcare Savings Account. This allows a person to save money pre-tax in an account to be used for medical expenses later. The premium savings from a high deductible can go into the account, for example.

Health Insurance

TIP! Be sure to take a close look at your needs and concerns when it comes to your open enrollment period. Even if a certain plan fit you well in the past, your needs may have changed, thus, you need different coverage.

There are lots of different options available with different health insurance plans. Prior to meeting your insurance agent, or setting up health insurance through work, know all of your options. Be certain you completely understand everything before making a final choice.

Is there something about your medical coverage that you are curious or confused about? Your questions could be answered with a simple phone call. Pretty much all health insurance providers have a phone number that you can call and speak with a customer service representative about your policy. You can find out details about your policy much easier than trying to research on your own.

TIP! It?s cheaper for the company you work for to get group health insurance than it is for you to purchase your own, so your premiums through your employer?s plan will be cheaper, even if your coverage is the same. A great way to get group insurance rates is to become a member of a trade organization with the option for insurance.

Health insurance policies have a long list of different coverage options, requiring you to do some homework and be very detailed and organized in your approach to selecting a policy. As you begin, be certain to have your paperwork close at hand, be ready to honestly assess your health care priorities, and make sure to review multiple carriers prior to choosing the company best able to provide the services you need.

It is very important to thoroughly read your insurance policy, so that you know exactly what services it does and does not cover. It can be costly if you see a doctor that is out of the network.

TIP! If you don?t, insurance companies could dismiss your enrollment or deny a claim just because you gave some wrong information. Read your entire enrollment package before you begin filling out your paperwork.

Reading the handbook for your health insurance policy will keep you informed for any future occurrences. This is the best way to get a clear idea of everything covered by your policy and find out more about the advantages linked to it. This might seem boring or overwhelming, but you never know when you?ll need to take advantage of particular benefits.

Health Insurance

TIP! If you are seeing a doctor whom you like and trust, you should try your best to get a health insurance policy that covers your visits to him. You can ask you doctor if they are partnered with any specific insurance company to save you time.

The more you know about health insurance, the wiser a decision you can make. Learn all you can so that you can get an affordable health insurance package that meets all your family?s needs. Health insurance is of the utmost importance, and you should learn all you can about it. Obtaining the right health insurance is crucial. Determining which health insurance policy to obtain is one of the most important decisions you have to make.

ARSAL, Lebanon (AP) ? This Lebanese border town has become a safe haven for war-weary Syrian rebels, a way station for wounded fighters and home to hundreds of frightened Syrian refugee families.

Residents of Arsal, a Sunni Muslim town of 40,000, say they have strong motives to help those trying to topple Syria's regime: they themselves were harassed and abused by it during three decades of de facto Syrian control of Lebanon.

But in siding with the rebels, many of them fellow Sunnis, Arsal is also deepening rifts with its Shiite Muslim neighbors in the Bekaa Valley that runs along Lebanon's eastern border with Syria. Large areas of the scenic valley are controlled by Hezbollah, the powerful Shiite militia that is supporting and ? according to the U.S. and the Syrian opposition ? also fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

For now, Lebanon's rival political and religious groups have largely tried to keep a lid on domestic tensions stoked by the conflict next door, with collective memories here still scarred by Lebanon's own 15-year civil war that ended in 1990. But any major escalation in Syria or miscalculation by the combatants' Lebanese supporters could ignite Lebanon's explosive sectarian mix.

Unlike some parts of Lebanon, the Bekaa has not been hit so far by sectarian violence linked to the bloodshed in Syria, although a drive along the valley's bustling main thoroughfare and the string of towns that line it, shows where the region's Shiite and Sunni loyalties lie.

In predominantly Shiite Baalbek, one of the Bekaa's larger towns, a downtown billboard shows Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah next to Assad, who is decked out in a military uniform and aviator glasses. "They will not weaken our resolve," reads a defiant caption.

The presence of Iran, the region's Shiite power and a patron of both Hezbollah and Assad, is also visible: A poster of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, with the slogan, "We can," hangs from roadside poles along a four-lane highway that signs boast was partially funded by Tehran.

A turn off the highway and down a winding uphill road, leads east toward the Syrian border and Arsal.

Homes here are bare-bones, made of raw gray cinderblock, without stone facades. A spray-painted Syrian rebel flag ? with green, white and black horizontal stripes and three red stars on the white ? decorates one of the walls in the center of town.

Bassel Hojeiri, principal of the local middle school, said people in Arsal back the rebels as fellow Sunnis fighting a regime controlled by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, but also because of deep-seated hatred of Syria's rulers.

As a border town, Arsal suffered under a particularly oppressive Syrian military presence when Damascus held sway in Lebanon from 1976 to 2005. Syrian troops at checkpoints near Arsal would sometimes beat area residents, arrest them without reason, demand cash or even seize cars, said Hojeiri, 37, a former mayor of Arsal.

"People hated them," Hojeiri said of the Syrian occupiers. "Now hopefully their time is ending."

The town has stood by the rebels from the start, and now is deeply involved in the conflict. Last month, Syrian warplanes in pursuit of rebels fired missiles that struck near Arsal. Lebanese media have also suggested weapons smuggled from Lebanon to the rebels go through Arsal; residents acknowledge there's a rich tradition of smuggling in Arsal, but say they don't know anything about arms smuggling.

Volunteers from Islamic charities have sneaked scores of wounded rebels into Lebanon, driving them from there to hospitals in Tripoli, a Sunni stronghold in northern Lebanon, and bypassing clinics in Hezbollah-run areas in the valley, said Mohammed Hojeiri, a local activist.

Arsal has also taken in hundreds of Syrian refugee families, most from villages in Homs province, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) to the northeast. Some of the refugees rent apartments, while others live with Arsal families or in a small camp on the outskirts of town, where tents are being replaced by cinderblock shacks to prepare for the harsh mountain winter.

Rebel fighters have also used Arsal as a temporary haven to rest from the fighting across the border.

Peach farmer-turned-fighter Mohammed Yousef left his village of Zara in Homs province late last month after airstrikes destroyed his home and many others in the village. He reached Arsal after a seven-hour cross-border trek across mountainous terrain, he said, adding that several dozen of his fellow rebels do the same from time to time.

"Arsal is the ... mother of the revolution," the 25-year-old said affectionately of his Lebanese hosts who have sheltered his extended family of 10 in an empty building.

Yousef dismissed Syrian troops as largely ineffective, saying most can be bribed, but swore to exact revenge from Hezbollah, which he blamed for the destruction in his village. "We want to slaughter Hassan Nasrallah, the dog," Yousef said of the Hezbollah leader. "He shelled us, he destroyed our houses, and killed our children."

Hezbollah denies that it is fighting alongside regime forces, and a spokesman declined further comment Monday.

Lebanese security officials have said a number of Hezbollah activists recently buried in the Bekaa Valley had been killed in fighting in Syria, while Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told the U.N. Security Council on Monday that "Nasrallah's fighters are now part of Assad's killing machine."

Hojeiri, the school principal, said tensions between Shiites and Sunnis in the valley have been rising since the start of the Syrian revolt. Each side is aware of the other's loyalties, and people are careful not to talk about politics when someone from the other sect is present, he said.

"People here don't want another (sectarian) war," he said.

In the past, ties between the communities were civil and even warm, he said, noting that some 200 men in Arsal are married to Shiite women from nearby villages.

For years, religious differences seemed unimportant, he said. Even during Lebanon's civil war, with its frequently shifting alliances, Shiites and Sunnis were partners more often than they were foes.

Timor Goksel, a former official in the U.N. peacekeeping force in south Lebanon, said he believes the two sides have too much to lose by bringing the Syrian conflict home.

"Sunnis are very much involved in stone quarrying and the Shiite families are mostly involved in the hashish business," he said. "Both sides respect each other's turfs and have their own livelihoods, hashish and stone."

Perhaps that's why the valley has not seen sectarian clashes ? unlike the majority-Sunni Tripoli, where sporadic fighting between pro- and anti-Syrian groups has killed more than two dozen people since May.

However, Sarkis Naoum, a columnist for Lebanon's An Nahar daily said the sectarian tensions bubbling under the surface could erupt at any time.

"If anything major happens, what is happening in Syria could expand into Lebanon," he said.

A diamond bigger than Earth?

LONDON | Mon Oct 15, 2012 6:54am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a U.S.-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of Earth's with a mass eight times greater. That would give it the same density as Earth, although previously observed diamond planets are reckoned to be a lot more dense. It is also incredibly hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (1,648 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulouse, France - estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F.Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40 light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

(The story was refiled to clarify density in 4th paragraph)

Bases-loaded sac fly by Kelly gives Detroit 5-4 win, 2-0 lead in ALDS

DETROIT - A dropped fly, two wild pitches and a little smooch for the baseball by a relieved reliever.

Then Don Kelly brought it all to an end with a simple fly ball.

Kelly scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, then hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth that lifted the Detroit Tigers over the Oakland Athletics 5-4 Sunday for a 2-0 lead in their AL playoff series.

"Was looking for a fastball and I got it," Kelly said. "It's a great feeling. To be able to go out there in that situation and do that."

Detroit will go for a sweep of the division series matchup in Game 3 on Tuesday at Oakland.

"We just need to win a game," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "If you start thinking about three games ahead, you lose your focus on Tuesday's game."

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera doubled twice for the Tigers, hit a fly ball that resulted in a two-run error and later singled in the ninth.

The Tigers overcame three A's leads and seesawed to victory. It was 1-all before a wild final three innings that included a big Oakland misplay, two game-tying wild pitches and several momentum changes.

It was the sixth straight postseason loss for the A's, all to Detroit. The Tigers swept Oakland in the 2006 AL championship series, winning the series on Magglio Ordonez's homer in Game 4 ? which was Detroit's last sudden-death postseason win before Sunday.

Omar Infante and Cabrera hit back-to-back singles off Grant Balfour with one out in the ninth. With men on first and third, Prince Fielder was intentionally walked, bringing up Kelly, who had stayed in the game as the designated hitter after pinch-running the previous inning.

Kelly's fly to right was plenty deep enough to score Infante without a play at the plate.

It was tied at 4 after both teams made their share of mistakes in the seventh and eighth. Cliff Pennington gave the A's the lead with an RBI single in the seventh, but center fielder Coco Crisp dropped Cabrera's two-out flyball in the bottom half, allowing two runs to score.

Oakland tied it in the eighth on a wild pitch by Joaquin Benoit, and Josh Reddick followed with a solo homer to give the A's a 4-3 lead. Then it was Ryan Cook's turn to throw a tying wild pitch, allowing Kelly to score as a pinch runner.

Pennington nearly came through again for Oakland in the ninth, but his deep drive down the left-field line was just foul. With runners on first and third and two out, Al Alburquerque got Yoenis Cespedes on grounder to the mound ? and it looked like the right-hander planted a little kiss on the ball before throwing to first after he fielded the comebacker.

On a drizzly day at Comerica Park, both teams were sloppy with the game on the line.

With runners on first and second and two out in the seventh, Cabrera lifted a fly to center. Crisp, charging hard, tried to make a basket catch but bobbled the ball. He nearly recovered to make a falling grab, but the ball popped out of his glove and the Tigers took a 3-2 lead.

Cespedes led off the eighth with a single and stole second and third. With one out and the infield in, Benoit threw a wild pitch to allow the tying run. The worst was still to come for the Detroit reliever, who allowed Reddick's homer to right that put Oakland ahead 4-3.

Reddick had struck out in all six at-bats in the series before that.

Oakland again gave up the lead immediately. The A's have taken the lead four times in this series, but on each occasion they failed to hold it through the bottom half of the inning.

Doug Fister allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings for Detroit, striking out eight. Rookie Tommy Milone was impressive for the A's, allowing a run and five hits in six innings. He struck out six.

Fister gave the A's trouble early with his slow, sweeping breaking ball, but Oakland hit four singles in the third to score a run. Crisp's slow roller to third turned into an infield hit when Cabrera threw wide to first. Drew struck out looking ? and had words for plate umpire Mark Wegner ? but Cespedes followed with a run-scoring single.

Oakland nearly scored again on a single to right by Moss, but rookie Avisail Garcia threw Crisp out at home.

The A's showed frustration with the plate umpire during Game 1, and that spilled over to Sunday. Reddick struck out looking for the third out of the third and threw his bat away immediately. Wegner took off his mask and stared at the Oakland outfielder as he headed back toward the dugout, but the situation didn't escalate.

Cabrera hit a one-out double in the bottom of the third ? to the same spot in left-center as his double in the first. He went to third on a single by Fielder and scored on a dribbler by Delmon Young that was too slow to be a double play.

Milone retired 10 in a row, starting with Young's RBI groundout.

NOTES: Oakland has struck out 23 times in the first two games. ... Benoit allowed 14 homers during the regular season, easily his most since 2004, when he spent some time as a starter. ... The A's are hoping LHP Brett Anderson is healthy enough to start Game 3 against Anibal Sanchez. Anderson missed the last couple weeks of the regular season because of a strained right oblique.

Kelley ( Classic Car ) Blue book values - Chevy Impala Forums

Thanks. FMV is pretty much what ever a person will pay. I have a reasonable idea of what its worth. It's more academic being that it will probably not be sold while I am alive. When I am gone, well, not much I can do about it. The simple answer is to go down to my insurance company and ask. They allegedly use the Kelley Blue Book Classic Car valuations. But inusurance companies lie, a lot. I was kinda in a bind when I put insurance on it. Therefore I would like to know from my own source before I speak to them about it. Bottom line is I will probably be changing the insurance on it. I called Hagerty and they seem to be right on line except one thing. They dont' want you to drive your car!!!!!! I can drive it 15K a year going to shows, out to dinner occasionally, cruising it. But god help me if I take it to the store for milk and something happens. Considered an errand. They told me it wont be covered. My car is for driving. Errands, cruising, work, etc., What ever I want. And the only limitations I should have is time and can I afford Premium gas. So that is why I am looking at all sources of valuation. The next step of course it to have it appraised. Which I will do because Farmers years ago first lied about the value they would give me, then denied they said it concerning an all stock 67 Galaxie XL500 fastback with the stock Q code 428 under the hood. I have learned not to trust insurance companies. Again thanks, I will look up the sources you gave me.

Sarah Lumholdt | Why You Need Auto Insurance

Auto Insurance Point Place OH There are more drivers hitting the road each year. This can lead to a higher possibility of a car accident. If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you have can make a big difference in the experience you have. But why do you need insurance and just how much do you need? Required coverage varies by state/province but usually includes the following: Liability: This type of insurance coverage can pay for the damage that you are responsible for. These damages can include bodily injury, and property damage. Damages from bodily injury can include medical fees, and lost wages. Property damage can refer to car repair costs or loss of use of property. If you are sued, liability insurance can pay for your legal fees. Recommended, more comprehensive levels of liability insurance are available that take care of more events than the stripped-down, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection pays for the medical treatment for you and other people in your car, regardless of who was at fault in the accident. It is required in some states and optional in others. This insurance may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. YouTube takes original programming venture abroad

(AP) ? YouTube is taking its original programming venture to Europe, announcing a slew of new partnerships aimed at internationalizing its array of tailor-made videos with content from Britain's BBC, London-based FreemantleMedia, Netherland's Endemol, and dozens of others.

The Google Inc.-owned video site said Monday it is launching more than 60 new video channels with content from Britain, Germany, France, and the United States. The new programming will be in addition to the 100 channels of content launched in the United States last year.

Like the pre-existing American offerings, the European channels will have a mix of celebrity-oriented, niche, and established programming.

"Some of the channels are personality-driven, others are from partners who are totally passionate about a subject," Ben McOwen Wilson, who manages YouTube's northern European partnerships, said in a telephone interview ahead of the announcement. He said the goal was to let content producers come up with something they couldn't deliver on TV.

The expansion into Europe marks another step in YouTube's foray into a business model typically associated with traditional commissioning editors.

McOwen Wilson said the new channels would include programming from BBC Worldwide, the British public broadcaster's commercial arm, Endemol, the Dutch company behind the "Big Brother" reality television franchise, and FreemantleMedia, an arm of German media giant Bertelsmann responsible for "American Idol."

He declined to say how much YouTube was shelling out for the European expansion. The Associated Press has previously reported that the company paid out $100 million (?77 million) to producers when it launched its U.S. channels in 2011, with advances reaching up to $5 million per channel. Factual programming includes "Euronews Knowledge," from rolling news channel Euronews and "Truthloader," by ITN Productions.

The channels will also count content from more niche players: the British offerings include online shows such as "Guinness World Records: OMG," co-produced by the famed U.K. record keepers and "The Jamie Oliver Food Channel" co-produced by the celebrity chef. Other British channels range from offerings on drum and bass (Mixmag TV) to childcare (Netmums) to makeup tips, fashion, royalty, and more.
