DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — A U.N. spokesman says a suicide attack in northern Mali has caused multiple deaths and serious injuries, continuing a recent string of attacks.
Olivier Salgado said Wednesday the casualties included U.N. peacekeepers and civilians but that he could not confirm totals because the situation was "evolving."
He said the attack occurred around 10 a.m. in the northern town of Tessalit, the site of a Chadian base.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Northern Mali fell to various rebel groups including Islamic extremists following a March 2012 coup. A French-led military intervention launched in January drove the rebels out of major towns, but top U.N. envoy Albert Koenders warned earlier this month that attacks in the past month were a "wake up call" highlighting the challenge of restoring security.
